A Message from the Pastor:

Dear Visitors to Our Web Site,

In my last letter, I indicated our awareness of a problem with a virus on our website. Finally, the problem has been located and eliminated. We still will be doing some work on this site, but you can now navigate our site in safety once again!

It is Lent, the time for ridding our lives of the various spiritual 'viruses' that infect our lives, diminish our energies, and keep us from being the vital, fulfilled beings we were created to be.

Growing up, I always thought of Lent as a gloomy season; or at least, a subdued one. I noticed that certain parts of the liturgy were missing, and as for Holy Week, I anticipated it with some trepidation as the pastor seemed intent on making Jesus's death all the more grisly so that we would be impressed. I was; but it was only as an adult, and an older adult, too, that I realized a big difference between being quiet and reflective, and simply being gloomy. I guess one needs to be an adult to understand that.

I've always seen Lent as follwing two parallel tracks: one, the following of Jesus as he sets his face toward Jerusalem, where he will die; and two, facing up to ourselves, and seeking during Lent to begin (not expecting to complete, but simply to begin) changing for the better some aspect of our being that has become dysfunctional, perhaps even harmful.

In my next letter, I will have some things to say about Holy Week, which begins March 28. As for now, I hope that you take advantage of Lent as a time of reflection and spiritual 'house-cleaning.'

If you do not have a church home, or would like to join Salem at worship, you are, of course, invited at any time. Why not join us at Salem for a family experience? Our Sunday Service is at 9 a.m. We also have a Saturday evening informal service on the third Saturday of each month.

Sincerely,
The Rev. David H. Myers
Pastor
