GriefShare Support Group

GriefShare is a 13 week long support group for people who have lost loved ones to death. Each week includes a video, small group discussion, and a workbook. It’s a place to find support and healing.

There will be two once-a-week 13-session classes, one on Tuesday afternoons and one on Tuesday evenings. Both will start on Tue, Sept. 13, 2016. A person may join either class at any time — also one may miss sessions due to conflicts in scheduling. In the event of inclement weather, please call Pastor Melissa (see below).

An afternoon session will be held at Norrisville United Methodist Church, at 2 p.m. (2811 W. Church Lane, White Hall, MD 21161; please call for directions – GPS is difficult).

An evening session will be held on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. at Salem Lutheran Church, 3825 Norrisville Rd, MD 21084 (across from Jarrettsville Elementary).

This is a non-denominational group; you don’t have to be a member of a church to participate. Cost of materials is only $10 for the 13 weeks.

For information or to register, please call: Rev. Melissa McDade, 410-692-6179, thomasjsullivan@hotmail.com

9/11 First Responders Sunday

Salem will hold a special worship service on Sunday, September 11 in remembrance of the 15 year anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The service will recognize and honor the services of first responders: fire fighters, police and others both active and retired. At this 9 AM service we welcome members of the Jarrettsville Volunteer Fire Company and thank them for their contribution to our community.

Following the service there will be a brief coffee hour while the children (and maybe adults) can examine the fire truck. One will be at Salem unless called into action.

After the service and coffee time, we are invited to a covered dish potluck lunch at the fire house. Please sign up on the sheet in the narthex indicating what you will bring. The Fire Company will supply chicken, rolls, drinks and dessert. Please see Ruth Phoebus if you have questions about the potluck.

Let us give the Fire Company a special thanks for all the selfless service they give to the community.

El Salvador Mission Trips

Lynn Larsen from our congregation has participated in two mission trips to El Salvador in 2014 and one each in 2015 and 2016.

In February 2014, 2015 and 2016, he served with others from around the USA as a volunteer for Eye Care International.  A Facebook link to that organization is https://www.facebook.com/pages/Eye-Care-International-El-Salvador/163391223765260.  The website is http://www.eyecarint.org.

In August 2014, he joined a delegation from the Metro-DC Synod on its “Accompaniment” journey to El Salvador to visit and worship with sister congregations in that country.  The Lutheran Church in El Salvador is a sister synod to the Metro-DC Synod.  The visit included participation with three other ELCA synods and congregations throughout El Salvador in an annual procession and ceremony to celebrate the anniversary (28th) of the Lutheran Church in El Salvador as a national church.  The delegation published a blog about their trip:  http://2014metrodcelsalvadormissiontrip.blogspot.com.
